Community: “a unified body of individuals”. Thanks to my community I am not alone in the battle for my life. Thanks to each individual which has spoken kind words, sent prayers and well wishes, made concerned calls, mailed inspirational cards, lifted my spirit, donated money, and been so selfless in showing genuine concern. Thank you for caring and not passing judgment. Thank you for looking towards my future rather than my past. The words “thank you” are simply not enough to express the gratitude which my family and I feel from your generosity and kindness.
It is scary when you are told you need a new liver if you plan to see your grandson, Skylar, turn three. Even more frightening is finding out a liver transplant costs $1 million dollars; I know, it’s almost unbelievable isn’t it?
Thanks to my wife’s relentless good heart I have health insurance. That makes the fight somewhat more feasible: they will cover 90% of the cost and it only means we have to come up with $100,000. ONLY $100,000!!! And the hurdle at the top of the mountain: $5000 must be raised before my name is even placed on the waiting list. It seemed unattainable, that was until my community stepped in and changed my mind. Please remember that every little bit helps.
I’ve been living a different life up here in metro Atlanta. My county roads have been replaced by bumper to bumper interstates. My days of running the front end loader have been traded for less strenuous sitting on a leather sofa. My coasting down dirt roads with Max, my great dane, are now short walks in the new neighborhood. My leisurely visits with friends have become hectic days full of doctor’s visits. My over-salted, fried food is now salt free and grilled. The booze that was killing me has been replaced by love that is sustaining me.
